Egypt Historical Sites
Egypt and the Nile
We ventured to Egypt in 2010 on a tour that include a Nile riverboat and a stay in Cairo. Our ship was Zahra operated by the Oberoi Hotel chain. While on the Nile we ventured with two interesting couples. On couple from Texas. He had a career as an oil executive and they who had lived for some time in the middle east. The second couple was from the Washington DC area, she a lawyer and he was a neurologist and researcher. We had a master’s educated Egyptologists who took us to all the ancient sites, sometimes in the evening after the crowds had left. We were not allowed to take photos on the most interesting part of Cairo which was the “secret” U.S. Armed Forces Infectious Disease Laboratory. This tour was arranged by a former Naval officer who was an SDSU student. A former collogue from SDSU, Dr. Abram Benenson had been stationed here and had helped develop oral rehydration therapy at the British Fever Hospital during the 1950s. This was effectively a CDC branch laboratory for Africa.
